Robert Lowell
1917-1977
Robert Lowell was a poet who suffered from manic-depressive disorder. Brought up in luxury, and having spent time at Harvard, Lowell was skilled in classical forms of poetry, but wanted to branch out from the pedantic and deliberately confusing style of poets before him. He eventually went on to write Life Studies, an autobiographical book detailing his experiences in and out of a mental hospital. He is known for his precise rhymes and dedication to old form with personal content.
